The Astana Extracurricular Railway Station was built in 1961 for 500 passengers with a total area of 4,456.7 square meters. In March 1962, Akmolinsk station was renamed Tselinograd station. The station was considered one of the largest on the Kazakhstan railway. More than 20 pairs of passenger trains passed through it every day.
Apart from its functional features, 11 times larger than the existing one, the Astana Train Station is designed specifically for Astana City to be a symbolic building that reflects the modern and contemporary aspects of the new capital of Kazakhstan.
More than 20 pairs of passenger trains passed through it every day. In 1990, a new high-rise station building was additionally put into operation. The main indicator of the station's capacity has increased to 1,800 passengers. Since 2001, it has been renamed Astana-1 station
Astana is in the geographical center of Kazakhstan and having a wide transport and communications network, in interaction with multiple modes of transportation. The new station is built as part of preparations for EXPO 2017, and will provide services for adjoining areas.
