A new hydrogen filling station for heavy traffic has been officially inaugurated in the Port of Gothenburg, a strategic investment that reinforces the port's role in the transition to sustainable transport.
According to the Swedish Energy Agency's statistics, in 2022, just under 5% of renewable fuels were used for domestic shipping in Sweden (HVO included but electricity excluded). Natural gas accounted for 14%.
The Port of Gothenburg and Norwegian energy company Statkraft are planning to construct a hydrogen production facility at the port, with operations due to commence in 2023. When hydrogen is produced using fossil-free power sources, such as hydropower or wind power, the hydrogen would also be fossil free.
The Port of Gothenburg is now ready to offer both electric and hydrogen solutions for heavy land traffic, which drives the transition towards a fossil-free future, says Viktor Allgurén, head of innovation at the Port of Gothenburg.
