Image: RWE. The battery energy storage system (BESS) industry is changing rapidly as the market grows. At the heart of what is becoming a crowded and competitive market is the role of the system integrator: putting together the components and technologies that bring BESS projects to life.
While the system integrator approach has a technical emphasis, it is somewhat risky for the largest projects and focuses competition at contract award time; the general contractor approach is management-driven, less risky due to the use of proven management architecture and processes, and focuses competition throughout project implementation.
System integrators have been the traditional solution for government agencies when they wanted to implement large complex programs. More recently, however, the general contractor approach is gaining popularity.
Too often, with the systems integrator approach, once the contract is awarded, team members initially involved in the selling and presentation process may suddenly become scarce. Systems integrators often remove subcontractors from the team while the work is in progress in order to bolster their profit margins.
