Shaft generators on board ships are driven by the main engine to supply power to the mains. The mains have to be supplied with constant voltage and frequency by the shaft generator whilst the speed of the main engine changes, i.e. when the vessel travels at different speeds or if the propeller speed strongly varies in heavy seas.
Shipbuilders are now integrating shaft generators into their newbuilds as Power Take-Off (PTO) systems to achieve considerable savings on energy and meet the necessary fuel/energy regulations. To ensure fuel sustainability and efficacy, some new vessels have incorporated hybrid propulsion systems into their vessels.
This application for an alternator just having the general description, and known to all as: the shaft generator. Before the shaft generator can be used to supply power, the ships main engine and therefore propeller shaft, must be running at a fixed speed appropriate for the shaft generator to supply a useable output of voltage and frequency.
There are currently two significant applications of shaft generators in the marine industry: Shipbuilders are now integrating shaft generators into their newbuilds as Power Take-Off (PTO) systems to achieve considerable savings on energy and meet the necessary fuel/energy regulations.
