Through their efforts, the Energy Storage System Guide for Compliance with Safety Codes and Standards 2016 was developed. This code for residential buildings creates minimum regulations for one- and two-family dwellings of three stories or less.
Stationary storage battery systems shall comply with the seismic design requirements in Chapter 16 of the International Building Code, and shall not exceed the floor-loading limitation of the building.
Until existing model codes and standards are updated or new ones developed and then adopted, one seeking to deploy energy storage technologies or needing to verify an installation's safety may be challenged in applying current CSRs to an energy storage system (ESS).
The 2017 NEC is likely to replace references to ESS installation in Article 480 and has proposed a new Article 706 Energy Storage Systems that consider the application of electrochemical energy storage along with other types of energy storage that are referenced in other Articles within the code (e.g., PV, Wind, etc.)
