Italian ministry authorizes 500 MW of BESS projects
The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has issued two single authorizations (AU) for the construction of battery energy
The Italian government is aiming for 15GW of BESS capacity by 2030 to maintain security of supply. The Italian government, regulator, and Transmission Service Operator (TSO) are creating an attractive regulatory environment for BESS by offering multiple incentive schemes and updating the grid code.
In addition to contributing to the decarbonisation of the Italian electricity grid, BESS projects play a key role in improving the responsiveness of the energy system to variable demands, stabilising the grid and enabling greater integration of renewable energy. That is why Italy aims to add 15GW of BESS capacity by 2030 (of which 11GW should be standalone and 4GW co-located). As of March 2025, Italy has got 1GW of grid-scale BESS capacity online, placing the country in third place in Europe (shared with Ireland) in terms of installed capacity, behind Germany (1.6GW) and the UK (5.6GW).
BW ESS' global experience in storage positions us as a reliable partner for large-scale projects. The partnership comes amid the accelerated growth of renewables in Italy. According to Terna, the transmission system operator, the country added 5.7 GW of wind and solar capacity in 2023 and another 5.4 GW during the first nine months of 2024.
