Thailand, officially the Royal Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a Southeast Asian nation at the center of the Indochina peninsula with a population of nearly 70 million.
Although Thailand is a regional leader in renewable energy, its use of energy storage is nascent. EGAT undertook some studies on the potential for energy storage and is piloting three battery energy storage installations. One is located alongside a solar project in Mae Hong Son Province to improve power supply stability.
There are currently few grid-scale energy storage projects in Thailand, although the situation is likely to change. In furtherance of its commitments under the Paris Agreement, the Thai government has enacted policies which envisage renewable energy accounting for the majority of grid capacity and output by 2040.
Energy storage is in its infancy in Thailand, and new business models are already emerging. As the regulatory framework adapts to accommodate new players in the market, we expect to see greater penetration in this area. As of May 2019, Thailand (including imports) had installed generation capacity of 42,835 MW, of which 14,566 MW (34%) was accounted for by EGAT power plants; 14,949 MW (35%) by independent power producers; 9,443 MW (22%) by small producers; and 3,878 MW (9%) by foreign producers of imported power.
