Blazes May Lead to Bans on Batteries Key to Renewable Energy
After a couple of fires at renewable energy battery storage sites in San Diego, a growing number of leaders in the county want to suspend the building of new ones.
A Facebook group called 'Stop the Seguro Battery Energy Storage System in Escondido' has 350 members who share news about lithium battery fires and opposition to battery projects across the country.
A pause on building new energy battery storage sites would undermine the county's commitment to its new Climate Action Plan. The largest such facility, a 30-megawatt system built in 2017, is located in Escondido.
“Solar and storage are the cheapest, fastest ways to bring much-needed affordable power to communities, as electricity demand and costs surge,” said Ted Kelly, Director and Lead Counsel for U.S. Clean Energy at Environmental Defense Fund.
